Which sensors are actually worth it for a glamping site?

Smart-home gear can be a money pit. But a few well-chosen sensors genuinely save you — because they catch the problems that turn into refunds while you can still do something about them. Here is what is actually worth it, and what to skip.

The test: does it catch a problem before the guest does?

A sensor earns its place if it warns you, in time, about something that would otherwise become a bad review or an emergency callout. Judge every gadget against that.

Worth it: hot tub temperature

The number one glamping complaint is a cold or cloudy tub. You cannot see it from your kitchen — let alone another county. A temperature sensor that alerts you when it drops out of range buys you the hours you need to fix it before check-in. Highest-value sensor on this list.

Worth it: leak / water detection

A slow leak under a hut or in a plant room is cheap to catch and ruinous to miss. A £10 leak sensor by the hot tub pump, water tank or bathroom pays for itself the first time it fires.

Worth it: heating / room temperature

In winter, a heater that has tripped means a freezing guest and a 10pm dash. A room-temperature sensor tells you a hut has gone cold before anyone arrives to a fridge.

Situational: occupancy / motion

Useful for knowing a hut is empty before a cleaner drives out, or spotting a no-show. Nice to have, not essential on day one.

Usually skip (at first)

Smart locks, voice assistants, energy dashboards — fine later, but they rarely prevent a bad review. Start with the ones that catch failures.

"But I don't want a smart-home project"

You don't need one. The old way meant running Home Assistant and wiring everything together — a hobby in itself. Modern sensors can post their readings straight to a dashboard over WiFi, so you skip the hub entirely. Wire what you want, and it just shows up.

How Beacon helps

Beacon takes readings from your sensors — over Home Assistant or directly, no hub required — shows them per property on one screen, and emails you the moment anything crosses a threshold you set. A cold hot tub, a leak, a heater that tripped: it reaches you before it reaches your guest.

Stop the small things slipping.

Beacon verifies your turnovers, answers your phone, and watches the property — so nothing slips before a guest arrives.
